What is title case?

Title case is the capitalization style used for headlines, titles, and headings, where the major words are capitalized and the minor "function" words are not. "The Quick Guide to On-Page SEO" is title case; "The quick guide to on-page seo" (sentence case) and "THE QUICK GUIDE" (all caps) are not.

The minor words kept lowercase are short articles, conjunctions and prepositions — a, an, the, and, but, or, for, of, to, in, on — unless they are the first or last word of the title, which are always capitalized.

Frequently asked questions

Which words are not capitalized in title case?
Short articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for), and short prepositions (of, to, in, on, at, by) stay lowercase — unless they are the first or last word of the title.
What is the difference between title case and sentence case?
Title case capitalizes all major words ("How to Write a Blog Post"). Sentence case capitalizes only the first word and proper nouns ("How to write a blog post"). Both are common; pick one per content type and stay consistent.
Does this follow AP or Chicago style?
It follows the common shared rules of both: capitalize major words, lowercase short articles, conjunctions and prepositions, and always capitalize the first and last word.
