How to Connect Medium to Writelio
Cross-post articles to your Medium profile with a canonical link.
Connect Writelio to Medium and cross-post your articles to reach Medium’s audience, with a canonical URL pointing back to your primary site so your original keeps the SEO credit. Connection uses a Medium integration token.
Before you start
- A Medium account.
- A Medium integration token (issued from your account security settings).
What you’ll need from Medium
Integration TokenMedium → Settings → Security and apps → Integration tokens → enter a description → Get integration token.
Connect Medium in 4 steps
1
Get your Medium integration token
In Medium, go to Settings → Security and apps → Integration tokens, enter a description like Writelio, and click Get integration token. Copy it.
2
Add the connection in Writelio
In Integrations, open the Medium card → Configure, paste the Integration Token, and click Save.
3
Test the connection
In the editor, open Share & Publish → Medium and click Test.
4
Publish with a canonical URL
Choose a visibility (Draft, Public or Unlisted), set the canonical URL to your original post, and click Publish.
What gets published
Publishing to Medium sends:
- Title & HTML content to your Medium profile.
- Visibility — draft, public or unlisted.
- Canonical URL — point it at your original article so search engines credit your site, not Medium.
Troubleshooting
Token rejected
Re-issue the token from Settings → Security and apps and paste it fresh. Tokens can be revoked if your account security changes.
Cross-post outranking my own site
Always set the canonical URL to your original post. Without it, Medium’s copy can compete with yours in search.
API access unavailable
Medium’s integration-token API is legacy and not issued for every account. If you cannot generate a token, use the Webhook or another CMS integration instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will cross-posting hurt my SEO?
Not if you set the canonical URL to your original article — that tells search engines which version is authoritative and protects your rankings.
Can I publish privately first?
Yes — choose Draft or Unlisted, review on Medium, then make it public.
Why might I not be able to get a token?
Medium’s token API is legacy. Some newer accounts cannot issue tokens; in that case use another integration.
